“Automation Sucks”: Why AgentBrief Built Its Platform Against Drip Campaigns

Automated drip campaigns have become the default way settlement service professionals try to stay in front of real estate agents. AgentBrief founder Mike Simon thinks that default is exactly what’s holding a lot of referral businesses back, and he’s built his platform’s positioning directly against it.

AgentBrief’s current tagline is blunt about where the company stands: automation sucks. Not automation itself, Simon is quick to clarify, but automating the one part of the process that was never meant to be automated: the relationship.

The Deliverability Problem Nobody Talks About

The first issue with drip campaigns is technical. Spam filters have gotten very good at spotting bulk, automated messages, and Simon says there’s no way around it once a message is coming from a CRM instead of a person’s own inbox or phone.

“When you’re using an automated communications tool, a CRM or any of these platforms that automate the responses, that is not a user’s native applications,” Simon said. “And the spam filters and security settings treat things differently.”

Even when a drip message clears the spam filter, the second problem shows up immediately: repetition. An agent who gets the same templated message every time they have a new listing starts to recognize the pattern, and recognition kills response rates. “The recipient becomes very suspicious and almost numb to these messages coming through,” Simon said, “because the message tends to just repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat.”

Why Investment, Not Just Personalization, Is the Missing Piece

Simon draws a sharp line between personalizing a message and actually being invested in sending it. A drip campaign can be personalized with AI-generated language and still fail, because the person behind it isn’t engaged with who’s receiving it or why.

“When you rely on a robot to do it for you, it becomes a numbers game,” he said. “I’m not invested in that. I pick and choose who I want to respond to.” That distinction, he argues, is why more personalization alone won’t fix a drip campaign’s underlying problem. Better wording doesn’t replace the fact that no one is actually paying attention to the recipient.

AgentBrief’s model requires a user to review and send every AI-drafted message themselves, using their own phone number or email address rather than a CRM’s. It’s a slower process by design, and Simon says that’s the point.

Why a Push Notification Doesn’t Wear Out the Way a Drip Email Does

The obvious question is whether push notifications eventually become their own kind of noise. Simon doesn’t think so, and he compares the mechanism to how people already use social media.

“If I’m interested in funny videos about horses, and that’s what you follow on social media, and you get an alert about funny videos about horses, you engage with it much more often because it’s your choice,” he said. A push notification about an agent someone has deliberately chosen to follow works the same way. An email or text about the same activity, sent to an inbox already full of things nobody asked for, doesn’t get the same attention.

That difference explains why AgentBrief built its alert system around push notifications tied to specific agents a user follows, rather than a broader distribution list. The notification isn’t competing with spam. It’s arriving because someone asked for exactly that information.

What Happens If a Competitor Copies the Data But Not the Approach

Simon has thought through what happens if a competitor eventually gets the same direct MLS access AgentBrief has spent years building, then pairs it with automated outreach instead. His answer is that the data alone won’t be enough.

“They’re missing part two to the equation,” he said. Real-time data creates the opportunity, but Simon argues the response still depends on a person who is engaged enough to act on it well. A competitor with identical data and a fully automated response, in his view, will get a fraction of the results, because the relationship-building step that actually converts an alert into business is the one thing automation can’t replicate.

For settlement service professionals evaluating whether a real-time alert system is worth the switch from a drip-based CRM, the distinction Simon draws isn’t about which tool has better data. It’s about what happens in the seconds after that data arrives, a moment AgentBrief’s homeowners insurance solution was also built around.
